Breathing Techniques for Stress Prevention

Stressed at work? Feeling a major burnout is around the corner? Join the club. More and more people are finding themselves juggling the overwhelming demands of daily life. Whether that is dealing with kids, a major product at work or both, Americans are accepting more and more stress into their lives which is fostering abnormal patterns for the mind and body, according to recently published news reports. And by accepting too much of these obligations into our lives, we literally invited fatigue, exhaustion and burnout.

The worst part? Research published in several business reviews and other places indicate most people do not address these risks until the crisis spurs them into action. Sometimes this action may be too late. A heart attack may have already occurred, or a mental breakdown may already be in the pipeline. Meanwhile, your mind and body is deteriorating at an unhealthy rapid rate.

Experts suggest one simple way to combat this problem – and it’s fairly easy: Practice and implement proper and preventative breathing techniques. Dysfunctional breathing occurs when the body takes in more oxygen than it needs. Just as you can improve your muscles and body image by working out, you can also improve your overall health by breathing right. Proper breathing techniques can also help prevent pneumonia when you have a chest injury or bad cough.

Here’s how you do it:

Step 1 – check your pulse. Checking your pulse gives you a baseline to start proper breathing techniques.

Step 2 – Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, keeping your mouth closes and hold for several seconds. This brings air deeply into your lungs which forces oxygen into the blood stream. This then triggers carbon dioxide to move from your capillaries into your alveoli.

Step 3- Exhale slowly. This pushes the carbon dioxide out of your lungs

Step 4-Continue this for five minutes.

Step 5 -Check your pulse again. You will likely find your heart rate has slowed and you may feel a bit better inside. With a low heart rate crucial to healthy living, this small but effective technique can improve your overall health.
